Sow, Grow & Enjoy: Easy Steps to Grow Tomatoes from Seed

There are so many varieties of tomatoes!  Heirloom tomatoes come in an array of colours and shapes, which you may not find in your local supermarket or grocer.  The beauty of growing your own is you can really taste the difference, we think homegrown tomatoes simply surpass store-bought.  Starting tomato plants from seed allows you to choose what varieties you would like to grow and try. Starting tomato plants from seed is an easy process so pull out your gardening gloves and let’s get to it!

Step 1: Gather Your Supplies:

  • Tomato seeds (obviously!)
  • Seed-starting mix
  • Seed trays or small pots
  • Labels (trust us, you’ll forget what you planted where)
  • Spray bottle
  • Plastic wrap or a clear plastic cover
  • A sunny spot or a grow light

Step 2: Fill your seed trays or small pots with the seed-starting mix, making sure it’s moist but not waterlogged.

Step 3: Gently press the seeds into the soil, cover them lightly with more mix, and give them a tiny sprinkle of water. Remember, tomatoes are delicate, so no need to bury them deep.

Step 4: Cover the seed tray with plastic wrap or a clear plastic lid to create a mini-greenhouse effect. This helps maintain humidity and temperature for sprouting.

Step 5: Once your tomato seedlings have grown to about 4-5cm, it’s time to give them some more growing space. Transplant them into larger pots.

Step 6: Once they have doubled in size they will be ready to plant into your garden bed or container.   Make sure you plant your tomato plants deep so ensure a strong foundation as they grow.  You can see more on how we do that here.

TIP: Don’t forget to label your containers – trust us you’ll forget what you’ve planted otherwise
